Frequently Asked Questions

At Modesto Junior College we understand that students, whether current or prospective, have questions about pursuing their college goals...and about the college experience itself.  We encourage our students to contact us with their questions by telephone, email, or by visiting our offices in person.  The Modesto Junior College Welcome Center, located in the East Campus Student Center, is a recommended first-stop for students with questions. The Welcome Center can also be reached at (209) 575-6789 or by emailing mjcinfo@mjc.edu.  The contact information for other offices and areas at MJC can be obtained by clicking the "Contact" link above.

Frequently Asked Questions

I want to attend MJC. Where do I start?
If you are a new, first-time student, your first step is to fill out the MJC Application.  You can access the application online at http://mjc.edu, or pick up a paper application on East Campus in the Admissions Office or the Welcome Center, or on the West Campus in the Admissions Office.  After filling out the application, follow the 6 Steps to Enroll.  If you are a student returning after an absence of more than one year, you should complete the Returning Student Update form.

How much is it going to cost?
You are in luck!  California community colleges are the least expensive form of higher education in the United States.  California residents pay just $20 per unit to attend.  Here’s a breakdown of other fees:

I need money for college. What are my options?
Apply for financial aid now!  Modesto Junior College offers the BOG Fee Waiver, one type of financial aid for California residents that can waive almost all of a student’s enrollment fees.  Turn in the Fee Waiver to the Financial Aid Office in Yosemite Hall 147 on West Campus.  Students also may apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, the FAFSA.  Apply online by following the previous hyperlink, or pick up a paper FAFSA form in the Financial Aid Office on West Campus or in the Welcome Center on East Campus.

When can I register?
After your MJC application or Returning Student Update form has been processed, you will be given a date and time to register.  You can register on that appointed date at that appointed time, or anytime thereafter.  You may register online through the PiratesNet system, over the phone using the t-Reg system (549-7000), or in the Admissions Office during business hours.

Do I need to see a counselor?
If you are a new student at Modesto Junior College, or if you are a continuing student at MJC and have never attended an orientation or guidance class, you need to see a counselor.  Once your application or returning student update form has been processed, you will receive a registration appointment card in the mail with dates and times for orientation and advising.  Be sure to attend an orientation and advising session prior to your registration date.

Are my classes transferable?
Modesto Junior College offers a large number of classes that transfer to four-year universities.  If you have questions about the transferability of your courses, especially for private and out-of-state schools, contact an MJC counselor (575-6080) or check in the MJC College Catalog.  The MJC College Catalog lists the UC and CSU transferability of courses at the end of individual course listings.
